For awhile I've been having this constant battle with my music rather if I should focus more on my southern style of beats and stick strictly with my underground NY/ Dilla inspired style. Many people have been like, mix them together. In my opinion some arts just don't mix...at least not all of the time. I've had a few beats were it's kind of sounded like both styles. More or less than the other but both.
Recently a few artists (rappers, if you will) have been reaching out asking me to send them some works. I sent one person a beat Saturday night and I feel it's one of my best...no response from this cat usually means he passed on it cause he has accepted my other beats. Point being, the beats that I feel are superb are the ones that usually get looked over but the ones that I don't vibe with as much or maybe even dislike are the ones that people are hyped about. Is there something wrong with my ears? smh
In that case like as some rappers have to "dumb down there lyrics" so there audience will catch up I'm feeling like I need to maybe...."dumb down my beats". How the hell would I do that I couldn't tell. Or maybe I just haven't really found my audience yet. I got a few people here and there that dig a major part of my works...but still...

I don't think that you should dumb down your beats. They're people out there who will understand and appreciate your music. You're building an audience that will grow with time. Just keep doing what you're doing and working on your craft

...thank you my crate-diggin' buddy ::hugs::
In my opinion I feel you should do whats best. Maybe you should just do both. Have ya dilla inspired beats and ya southern beats. I actually like some of your southern beats though I'm not a southern beat fan because me as an artist i don't sound good over those beats. Truth be told my rap voice is "soft" and I don't have the accent for it. I fucks with you cuz you talented and all that other shit. But over all You should do both. Though I don't make beats.. i know it aint easy to mix ny/dilla/southern beats 2gether. But keep doing what you do. And as far as the whole beats that you feel the most and others pass on thats just how it goes. Like when I do a song that i think people are gonna feel the don't but the shit that I'm just like"well its presentable" thats the one people tend to like the most. Be easy homie

there is a perfectly logical reason y u feel this way...imma explain it from a rapper view...in short...when u make a cerrtain song , for whatever reason it may be particularly special to you and deemed as one of your best , but to others "its just another song" ...and then songs you do just for the fuck of it turn out to be your most liked...this goes into the connection an artist has with his work ...a connection that noone can get but an artist tries to convey to his audience ..but still its underplayed...sadly , commercial sounding shit is just more popular than stuff with feeling...and thats the thing about ur music...its never commercial..even when its near commercial it always has the element of soul embeded in it...you may find that the beats you dont like or dont favor as much are the ones you did for people, knowing that theyd like it..meaning you didnt do it thru ur self alone...when you make a beat that is soley based on ur feelings , soul and intentions it will sound like heaven to ur ears and a select few but most likely noone else will get that....
hope i made sense homie..
peacee..
...good look on the input. I can actually take something out of reading both. It's appreciated.
